Buying a computer is easy. Walk into a computer store, and buy a cool looking case with bunches and bunches of extra gadgets and “whatchamacallits”. Take it home and plug it in. Building one yourself using the right computer parts is far more satisfying and allows you to build your PC exactly as you chose.

First is a quality motherboard. Names of some quality motherboard manufactures are Asus, Intel, Gigabyte, MSI (Micro-Star International) etc. Don’t settle! Buy the best computer parts you can afford. The motherboard is the core to your new system.

Next would be memory or “Ram”. Because there are so many manufactures I will mention but one. Kingston In all the years of building computers I have never had a bad stick of Kingston ram. Not once! I think that speaks for itself. Memory is like money. There is no such thing as too much. Buy as much memory as you pocket allows. If you bought a quality motherboard, then you should have several memory slots or “DIMM slots” on the motherboard for expansion.

Following memory would be your processor or “CPU”. The two giants in the CPU world are Intel and AMD. I will say they are both very different in design but when you purchase, the faster the processor the better.

Last but not least are hard drives. Hard drives also contribute in a machine’s performance. Performance is everything. Some major brand names in hard drives are Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate and Toshiba. Check with the drive manufacturer to verify drive performance.
